Measuring What Matters is an reflective instructional evaluation tool that provides for learning opportunities throughout the school year for teachers. It allows teacher-peers to provide feedback and data in a reflective way by making visual observations and having conversations with students during a 20 minute period. This tool allows us to redefine the term evaluation as well as the role of observer. The classroom visit is done by 2-3 peer-educators who collect information on a I-Pad or other data generating tool that contains the classroom visit protocol. The visit is based on three main protocol: Engagement, Alignment and Rigor.
In order for this tool to work, there must be a reflective conversation, with the teacher observed, following the visit where the collected information is shared and discussed. I was trained on this process and have been using it in our classrooms throughout the school year. This tool is meaningful and useful to educators because it draws out information that is not often realized in a more traditional evaluation method.

Engagement
Students are on task; interested in the work; and they are actively processing information(listening, reading, thinking, making) and /or communicating information (speaking, performing, writing)
Alignment
What is being taught and what students are being asked to do are aligned with the standards and curriculum; are "on time" andd on target with the scope and sequence of the course fo study; and provide students opportunities to experience high stakes assessment methodologies among other assessement approaches.
Rigor
Learning materials and instructional strategies being used challenge and encourage all students to produce work or respond at or above grade level or at or above IEP designated level. All students are required to demonstrate mastery at these levels and have the opportunity for re-teaching to mastery.
